Corona in the World: Italy - The rights and wrongs!
Italy was the first country in Europe with proven local transmission of SARS-CoV-2. The virus was circulating since 2 months prior the (supposed) index case and the situation got bad very fast, with a high hospitalisation and mortality rate. The government acted quickly and firmly ordering a total lockdown on the 9th of March 2020 for 2 months, which allowed “hammering” the epidemic curve and reopening gradually during the spring and summer. However there is something untold in the widespread praising of the “Italian model”, as we can definitely say the country was unprepared back in February and is, once again, unprepared right now, while facing the second wave. Why is this happening again?
This question will be answered by ITM alumna Ornella Punzo (TMIH, 2011) involved as a researcher in the COVID-19 epidemiological surveillance and in other COVID-19 working groups.
